Hunningham

Hunningham is a small rural village which is bounded by the River Leam on its western limit and straddles the Fosse Way at Hunningham Hill on its eastern edge. There is a friendly community, however it is spread out over a fairly wide area with fields separating three main clusters of population: one close to the church; another radiating from the junction of Long Itchington Road and Main Street; plus a third cluster on Hunningham Hill. The village now comprises of 80 households and 164 registered electors (Warwickshire District Council Hunningham Full Register 2019).

Over the last 1,000 years growth has not been dramatic as a recorded settlement in the Domesday Book, “in the hundred of Marton and the county of Warwickshire”. The document showed the village had a population of 17 households in 1086, and listed 2 owners (the Tenant-in-chief was William son of Corbucion) with a total value to the Lord of 1 pound and 10 shillings.

The Church of St. Margaret dates from the latter part of the 13th century, when it consisted of a nave and chancel, and appears to have been repaired at the end of the 14th century, and re-roofed at the end of the 16th century; in modern times a north aisle, vestry, and south porch were added and the whole church considerably restored. A community room has also been added to the church, known as The Parish Room.
